A view of Malton Market

A64 Road

The A64 stretches northeast from York to Malton.

According to Coxe, this stretch of road is haunted by the ghost of a young woman named Nance. Her story is a tragic one, for she was seduced by a highwayman, and subsequently abandoned along with the child they had together. Both mother and baby died of exposure on the road. As a result, her wraith now guides lost travellers along this route.
